New Internet applications and services are associated tornthe provision of quality of service (QoS) guarantees andrndifferentiation demands. Consequently, many emergingrnInternet protocols and mechanisms have appeared to ensurernend-to-end QoS. Obviously, network operators andrnservice providers will charge the use of network resourcernreservation in a more expensive way than the classicalrnbest-effort (BE) service to encourage a rational utilizationrnof resources. For this reason, it is essential to minimizernresource reservation when possible. In this paper, wernbriefly review an initial and simple method proposed byrnus to minimize the cost when Internet traffic flows arernclassified as semi-elastic. Our method is based on a clientserverrnscheme in which the client controls its memoryrnoccupancy to determine when it is necessary to reservernresources or to use a BE mode for the transmission maintainingrnthe same connection. Then, we present an enhancedrnmethod to achieve high accuracy in the minimizationrnwhen the best-effort delivery rate presents high variability.rnThe results for a system implementation in the ns-rn2 network simulator are presented, showing the goodrnperformance of this new method.
