Since about 1995, various products have been developed to reduce the temperature at which Hot MixrnAsphalt (HMA) is mixed and compacted. These products or technologies essentially reduce the viscosityrnof the asphalt and lower production temperatures by as much as 50 oC. Lower plant mixing temperaturesrnmean fuel savings, which in turn lowers emissions. This results in reduced odour, fumes and greenhouserngas emissions. In Europe, the development of these products was in direct response to reducingrngreenhouse gases as per the Kyoto Protocol targets. The reduction in viscosity also offers several auxiliaryrnpaving benefits such as better workability, improved compaction, the ability to increase ReclaimedrnAsphalt Pavement (RAP) usage, and permits longer hauling distances. For these reasons, warm asphaltrnhas gained a genuine momentum across North America over the last 5 years.rnIn 2007, Bitumar initiated several trial projects to demonstrate the effectiveness of Sasobit? to the OntariornMinistry of Transportation, local municipalities and the hot mix industry. In partnership with R. W.rnTomlinson and the City of Ottawa, a Sasobit warm asphalt technology pilot project was constructed onrnVictoria Street within the City of Ottawa. Tomlinson placed approximately 950 tonnes of warm asphaltrnmix at a normal production rate with great success. The Sasobit modified PG 58-34 was supplied byrnBitumar. This paper discusses the practical aspects of this trial. The focus is on plant production, layrndown, and the ability to pave at lower ambient temperatures. Fuel savings on the project are alsornpresented.
