Application of quality assurance program criteria to performance assessment activities

The Total System Performance Assessment (TSPA) will be used as evidence of the proposed repository's ability to meet regulatory safety criteria,and provides input to the repository design process and site characterization activities.Performance assessments of potential high level radioactive waste repositories are required to determine compliance with 10 CFR 60.112.The TSPA is an analysis in which all significant features,events,and processes are represented in models of appropriate level of complexity to estimate behavior of the system and to compare this behavior against specified performance standards.The level of documentation and traceability of inputs,assumptions,and decisions therefore needs to be consistent with the level of documentation supporting engineering and site characterization.To be adequate,documentation must encompass not only the rationale and bases for selecting a particular course of action (for example,identifying a bounding condition,using a particular model or abstraction,or selection of an appropriate parameter set),but must also identify those other factors or actions that were considered but rejected,including the screening criteria used.
