Evaluation of UMTS Cell Coverage and Capacity for Voice Traffic using the ETSI-3GPP QoS Model

Analytical and simulation models are used for the evaluation of uplink coverage and capacity planning in a WCDMA-FDD system transporting voice traffic. In this paper, we evaluate the coverage-capacity tradeoff with analytical models derived from the literature and simulation. The simulation model, based on the ETSI criteria, allows to capture important aspects that cannot be investigated analytically. In addition, the effect of a CAC (Call Admission Control) policy, based on the control of the interference level, is included in the performance evaluation obtained with the simulation model.
