This research work aims at providingrnevidence for staff-oriented design ofrnhospitals. Attention was paid to the luminousrnenvironment where nurses work. Authorsrnconducted literature reviews on historicalrnchanges in architectural planning of wardsrnand recent examples of hospitals in Japan,rnsurveys of nurses on their services and workrnenvironments, and case studies on actualrnconditions of nurses' work and sleep.rnLighting strategies for countering effects ofrnshift work function with proper workingrnconditions. Zone lighting that is controllablernaccording to time as well as nurses' taskrnwould be a solution to achieve patients'rngood sleep and nurses' efficient work.
