Linked Data -- Enabling Standards and Other Approaches

Linked Data is a term used to describe a set of bestrnpractices for publishing, sharing, and connecting structuredrndata on the Web. It is “about using the Web to connectrnrelated data that wasn't previously linked, or using the Webrnto lower the barriers to linking data currently linked usingrnother methods.”[1] The panel will introduce and discussrnstandards and alternative approaches enabling, representingrnand disseminating data as linked data, including:rn1.ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 34 (for Document Descriptionrnand Processing Languages standards related to structuredrnmarkup languages) [2] and ISO TC46/SC9 (Identificationrnand Description) [3] activities updates; the second editionrnof Web Ontology Language (OWL2) [4] -- by Sam Oh.rn2. W3C’s RDFa which is actively being refined [5]rnand has generated significant fresh usage activities -- byrnJon Phipps and Ed Summers.rn3. W3C Library Linked Data Incubator Group [7]rnprogress – by Marcia Zeng, John Phipps, and Ed Summers.rnThe ASIST Standards Committee has been organizingrnstandards updates sessions at each ASIST annualrnconference. The purpose is to promote the awareness ofrnstandards issues by major standards bodies including: ISO,rnNISO, and W3C. Meanwhile, the sessions usually bring inrna focused panel to address an array of important issuesrnaround standards and applications in which the ASISTrncommunity would be interested. Presenters will givernintroduction to the standards specified at their positionrnstatements above, lead audience-participated discussions,rnand answer questions.
