TOTAL HIP ARTHROPLASTY AFFECTING BALANCING ABILITY AFTER SUDDEN PERTURBATION

The goal of this research was to analyze the effect of totalrnhip arthroplasty (THA) on balancing ability among 20rnhealthy elderly people and 18 subjects operated on by arnconventional direct-lateral approach during the earlyrnpostoperative period. Balancing ability after suddenrnperturbation was modeled by the provocation test duringrndouble leg and single leg stance. The Lehr’s dampingrnratio characterized the balancing ability calculated fromrntesting at double leg stance did not differ significantlyrnfrom the results of testing at stance on thernunaffected/healthy limb; however the results from testingrnduring stance on the affected limb in patients differedrnsignificantly from the results of the other two tests in thernearly postoperative period. These results indicated that thernhealthy/unaffected side is always dominant. Furthermore,rnTHA significantly decreased balancing ability on thernaffected side after sudden perturbation. Our resultsrnshowed that the balancing ability sudden perturbationrndeteriorated 6 weeks after THA; however, 12 weeks afterrnTHA it improved compared to the results prior to surgery,rnalthough it did not return to normal. Deterioration inrnbalancing ability after sudden perturbation can increasernthe risk of falling.
