Presidential Young Investigator Award: Large-Scale Problems in Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics

This multi-year research project (Grant DDM-9058074) focuses on the application of operations research methods to large-scale problems in Transportation, Distribution and Logistics. The scope of the project includes model formulation, algorithmic development, coniputer implementation and computational testing. In 1994-1995, the focus was on the development of models and solution strategies for a variety of problems faced by providers of transportation services. Specifically, we are studying problems involving: intermodal freight transportation, service design for transportation carriers, railroad blocking, integer multi-commodity network flow problems, network design for express shipment pickup and delivery, airline fleet assignment and maintenance routing, airline crew scheduling, and real-time less-than-truckload operations. For these large-scale applications, we are developing new models and techniques to obtain integer solutions.
