Europe's Challenge on HEV: A Challenge for Europe?

The introduction of hybrid vehicles into the European market leads to hard requirements on hybrid electric vehicles. In Europe, driving is fast and very dynamic. Partial load efficiency must be improved also in the high speed region. Therefore, more electric power than in other regions will have to be installed. Several new research and development challenges occur. The low load and idle losses must be reduced. The high torque-to-volume ratio will need mechanically integrated design of the motor, the power electronics, the gear and the internal combustion engine. The system optimisation requires improved design tools combining finite element method, fast analytical calculation, and time domain simulation.
