In this paper we have investigated both theoretically and experimentally the behavior of MMI lasers. These types of lasers are very attractive as high output power pump laser due to their large active volume that leads to both thermal and electrical resistance reduction. Such reduction is very efficient to push the saturation at high output power. Such effect has been experimentally demonstrated ; an improvement of 10% of the maximum output power emission has been recorded as compared to standard straight waveguide pump laser of same length. Our work shows in addition that optimized design MMI laser should have narrow waveguide width (W_(MMI) < 10 μm) and should operate at the first order. In these conditions, the fabrication tolerances are relaxed and at least compatible with standard laser process (control of waveguide width within 0.2μm); the performances of the laser are therefore reproducible.
