ACHIEVING STRETCH TARGETS IN MINIMUM TIME

Applying 28000kg of SS weld overlay onto 300m2 internal surface area of a tall insulated carbon steel pressure vessel within in an outage duration of 22 days sounds like a challenge. Then have three separate additional projects where "this duration is a great opportunity to do these at the same time", but they are all taking place in the same work area. Without the ability to increase the outage duration the challenge was presented to the team at Mainstream Engineering Ltd (MEL) and required some careful planning and risk management. The project had all the hazardous challenges of garnet blasting and hot work at height in a limited access confined space with multiple work fronts above and below each other. There were doubts about completing the quantity of work safely within the available time. This is not the first time MEL have been presented with this size of challenge, but it is one of the more significant. There are multiple contracting companies from different countries working 24/7, in a 500m3 volume. The presentation describes the challenges presented, the tools used and methods employed to complete the work in the time available and without incident.
