The impact of new technologies and other changes in HE means that roles, expectations and potentially whole cultures are changing and being re-engineered or re-configured. One of the most significant changes is the arrival of the concept of a managed learning environment (MLE). Technology seems to have moved forward at a faster pace than our university infrastructures. Virtual learning environments (VLB) are common in universities, many of which have bought in commercial packages such as WebCT or Blackboard. On the other hand, few institutions have a record of a full MLE operation although in the UK many colleges of further education (FE) have made some moves, driven by the government MLE agenda for further education. As yet, this has had little impact on higher education (HE) although it is conceivable that if nothing else happens there will be some driver from student expectations as student's transfer from FE to HE. Clearly such a significant push to MLE from a strong, 'government funded central body will have a significant impact on the sec or as a whole, whether individual parts are signed up to it or not.
