Tunneling in the Europaviertel Frankfurt: A Case Study on TBM vs. NATM

In order to connect the Europaviertel to the underground subway in Frankfurt/Main, an extensionrnto the subway line U5 is planned as a branch of the existing subway line U4. The subway tunnel with an overallrnlength of 1.62 miles will be driven by cut-and-cover and by mining construction methods. For the minedrnsection, a case study comparison of two tunnel driving methods, TBM and the New Austrian Tunnel Methodrn(NATM), will be compared and discussed.
