STRUCTURAL STEEL FOR SENSITIVE REPAIR OF HISTORIC EXETER STREET THEATER

Boston nearly lost the Exeter Street Theater, one of its architectural treasures, so-named for its most famous occupancy. This impressive historic masonry and timber structure with a slate roof and copper cupola is located at the corner of Exeter and Newbury Streets in Boston, Massachusetts. It stands as a prime example of the charm that defines the architecture of the neighborhood. Used now as a retail, business, and restaurant property, it is one of the anchors of this, premier Boston shopping and business district. A devastating fire threatened this local landmark when it destroyed portions of the building's roof and cupola and severely damaged one of the heavy wood trusses that span more than 80' across the building. Faced with the unequivocal charge to preserve the structure, the structural engineering team needed to find ways to reconstruct the structure in its original character, while meeting the structural demands of the modern building code.
