Case study: Nighttime aggregate truck noise in rural communities

With the frequency of night paving projects on the rise in Central California, the aggregaternindustry is facing increasing opposition from rural residents to noise generated duringrnthose nighttime operations. While the noise of on-site activities is certainly an issue, it isrnmore easily mitigated than off-site heavy truck traffic noise. This paper presents a casernstudy of an existing central valley aggregate plant seeking approval to operate at nightrnwhen nighttime operations are required to satisfy night asphalt paving contracts. Itrndiscusses interior and exterior sensitivity during late night hours, provides the results ofrnnew research into optimized heavy truck operating parameters, explores sleep disturbancernissues and limitations of ANSI/ASA S12.9-2008 / Part 6 in addressing those issues, andrnpresents the challenges of mitigating off-site heavy truck passby noise at rural residences.rnThe case study concludes that the ANSI/ASA S12.9-2008 is not appropriate for thernprediction of sleep disturbance in this example and that an innovative new approach tornreducing aggregate truck passby noise exists.
