As health organizations change from legacy systems to more modern user interfaces (UI's), how might these new UI's be designed to fit with clinical nurses' characteristics? Using a sample of 98 clinical nurses, this study examined the relationship of clinical nurses' demographic, cognitive, and computer experience measures with their reaction times during computerized orders management for text-based and graphical user interfaces (GUI). The total explained variance for these predictors in the text-based system was 37.8%, while in the GUI, it was 32.8%. Both cognitive and computer experience variables were significant predictors of RT after age and gender were controlled. These results have implications for design and training of clinical information systems (CISs). This research was funded by TriService Nursing Research Program, grant #93-046.
