Colour appearance has been extensively studied. It was foundrnthat assessing the third dimension of colour appearance, such asrnchroma, colourfulness or saturation attributes, normally are morerninconsistent than for other two dimensions (lightness and hue),rneven with experienced observers. Two psychophysical experimentsrnwere conducted to address the issue using British and Koreanrnobservers respectively. The following word scales to represent thernthird dimension were scaled by observers: ‘bright’, ‘light-heavy’,rn‘active-passive’, ‘fresh-stale’, ‘clean-dirty’, ‘clear’, ‘boring’,rn‘intense-weak’, ‘saturated’, ‘vivid-dull’, ‘distinct-indistinct’, ‘fullthin’,rnand ‘striking’. All observers did not have any colour sciencernbackground, nor did they receive any training about each wordrnscale. Predictive models of saturation and of vividness wererndeveloped to fit the experimental results. They reflect novicernobservers’ view of colour appearance.
