The toxic and harmful substances, including heavy metals (Cd, Cr (Ⅵ), Pb and Hg) and fluorescent substances in six different food packaging paper have been determined. For comparative purpose, four samples of non-food packaging paper were also analyzed. The results showed that all samples of food packaging paper contain up to 3.81mg·kg~(-1) Pb, 0.10mg·kg~(-1) Cd and 0.2mg·kg~(-1) Cr (Ⅵ), whereas the mercury content presented levels of below the detection limit (< 0.001ppb) of the instrumental technique. The fluorescent substances were generally lower than the limit regulated by Chinese national standards. However, some of the heavy metal contents were higher than the limitation stipulated by EC directive on packaging and packaging waste.
