Spun-dyeing of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers with carbon black (CB) can effectively reduce the static electricity of PAN fibers. CB dispersions, which can be used in spun-dyeing of PAN fibers, should have good dispersibilty in spun-dyeing solutions. The dispersibility of CB is mainly affected by dispersing media and dispersants used. Para-dioxane, pyridine, acetone, glycerol and water were used as dispersing media, and the particle size of CB decreased with the increase of the dielectric constant of dispersing medium, and the dispersing stability of CB dispersions increased inversely. In aqueous medium, the mixture of nonionic dispersant and anionic dispersant was superior to that of mono dispersant, especially the mixture with polymeric dispersants. Moreover, the effects of dispersing methods were investigated. The effect of ultrasonic on CB dispersions was similar to microfluidizer. Both dispersing methods were obviously better than mechanical agitation.
