GROUNDWATER PROTECTION IN BELARUS

There is a close connection between surface and groundwater resources in Belarus. Heavy exploitation of groundwater has caused serious reductions in flow in many influent streams. It has also resulted in increased groundwater pollution, although much is associated with waste disposal sites and industry. Current water treatment methods focus on the chemical removal of iron by oxidation. The introduction of biological treatment will improve the removal of iron and also deal with a wider array of polluting agents. Despite the Chernobyl disaster, groundwaters are not significantly affected by leached radionucleides.
