The existence of mechanical fatigue of materials under cyclic stressing was established by Rankine and the basic laws of the phenomenon were investigated experimentally by- L. Wohler. The designer must know Fatigue failure.rnThe calculation of elastic deformations and of the conditions of elastic instability is the main subject of books dealing with applied elasticity. A little known case of static fatigue is that observed in the brittle fracture of steels, which may occur suddenly after prolonged steady loading. In the present paper, only the conditions of failure by Fatigue are considered in detail.
