Polymers have been used as formulation components to enhance the properties of lubricating greases for many years. The main role of polymers in grease has been to increase base oil viscosity and to improve adhesion of finished greases. A performance characteristic that has been emphasized over the last several years is water resistance. Functionalized polymers have been used to improve water resistance, leading to evaluation of grease rheology using the controlled stress rheometer in a paper published in 1996 by Scharf and George. Evaluating and testing new components such as polymers represents an area of continued interest as the grease industry advances into the future. This paper reviews recent work comparing properties of greases formulated with different polymers. These polymers have successfully improved water resistance properties as well as other grease characteristics in simple lithium and lithium complex greases.
