This paper discusses the capabilitiesrnand limitations of large channel count WDMrntransmission in Long-Haul and Metro networks,rnwith up to 64 channels and for channel rates ofrn2.5 Gb/s and 10 Gb/s. We discuss the trade offsrnbetween maximizing the number of channels, thernbit rate, and the number fiber spans, asrndetermined primarily by amplifier noise, non-flatrngain, limited output power, and receiverrnsensitivities.
