Strand size effects on properties of oriented strand board (OSB) from Leucaena leucocephala wood

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of strand size (S1 and S2) on board properties of oriented strand board (OSB) using Leucaena leucocephala wood under laboratory conditions. Strand size of S3 was used as core materials. The quality of the boards were evaluated by determining the bending properties including modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR), internal bond (IB) strength and thickness swelling(TS). Generally, board properties of strand size S1 perform better than S2 and all board properties meet the minimum requirement set by EN 300. The statistical analysis of physical and mechanical properties indicated not effected by strand size except for MOE in major axis. All board performance meets the minimum requirements of standard EN 300 OSB/1 for general purpose board and it appears that Leucaena leucocephala wood is a potential raw material for OSB manufacture.
