There has been new and interesting projects involving gas fuelled engines on ships during the last years, and DNV has been fortunate to be part of it. In this paper we will share some of our experience on gas fuelled ships, gas engines, and rule development. We will look at operational experience with the Glutra ferry. This ferry is now followed by two supply vessels equipped with dual fuel gas engines, being built in Norway right now. We will look into these gas supply vessels' lay out and the safety considerations done for the project. Also the Knutsen LNG carrier built in Holland with gas fuelled engines in combination with conventional diesel engines will be mentioned. Rules for classification of gas fuelled engine installations were introduced in January 2001, and we will look at the main contents of these. The work DNV has done on risk evaluations will also be highlighted. Finally expectations for future gas fuel projects will be presented.
