In most engineering situations it is of great practical importance to perform reliable FE analysis for mechanical problems involving highly non linear behaviours and coupled effects. For such a complex problem, automatic adaptive FE strategies are required for the accuracy control and the improvement of numerical soltions. The aim of this paper is to present the work, initially performed on hierarchical and adaptive mesh refinement in elastoplasticity and strain localisation, which has been recently extended to thermoelasticity involving phase-change effects.
