M.C. FLEMINGS' CONTRIBUTIONS TO EDUCATION

Merton C. Flemings' impact on the field of solidification and metal casting is paramount; the program of this symposium is certainly a testimonial to his accomplishments. However, what is even more significant is the lasting and immense effect he has had on the educational frontier. Mert Flemings has been a key influence in the field of solidification processing, because of the understanding he has brought to the field ― to fellow academicians and to practitioners in the industrial sector. At MIT, through his role as advisor to over 130 graduate students and his charge as teacher to countless others, Mert Flemings has made a remarkable and lasting effect on education. As mentor, Department Head, role model, and Professor, he has developed a generation of engineers, scientists, and faculty. At the national level, in terms of strategic directions for the field of materials science and engineering, he has played an important role in policy formation. In the international arena, Flemings is a pioneer in globalization. In pursuit of the educational mission, he has formed critical alliances in Japan, Europe, China, and many other parts of the world. Most recently, he established and is heading the MIT-Singapore educational project. Mert's tremendous and varied accomplishments are based upon his fundamental passion for education and the pursuit of knowledge, which has served as the keystone of his work. He has "touched" and "shaped" many minds, discoveries, and people. In this presentation, we will review key milestones, and the lasting impact Mert's work has had on the field of solidification and metal casting, and the materials community.
