Assessment of Multiple Benefits of Green Infrastructure Opportunity Mapping: Case Studies from the UK

The engineering sector is increasingly embracing digital approaches which enable production of data and understanding of variety of issues not achievable even a few years ago. The use of such approaches enables the production of a vast pool of evidence to enhance decision, reduce risks, and understand implications and options that would otherwise not be possible. In the water industry, this has seen tools that are developed to produce datasets indicating opportunities for installation of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) as part of wider Green Infrastructure (GI), high resolution load allocation models for water quality, upland Natural Flood Management (NFM) opportunity mapping or road gully flood risk assessments, to name but a few. These tools could be incorporated into a wider digital strategic or master planning assessments to support an integrated and informed urban and wider watershed planning. This paper gives an overview of projects in the UK that have made use of GI opportunity mapping to inform such planning.
