Impact of Vision 2030 on CFD Practices in Propulsion Industry

United Technologies Corporation contributed extensively to the development of the CFD Vision 2030, with Dr. E. Lurie of Pratt & Whitney being one of the co-authors of the 2014 study [1]. Since the publication of the Study in 2014, at United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) we have observed a number of developments and trends impacting the application of CFD simulations to turbomachinery flows, and the evolution of best practices for such simulations. Some of them were anticipated and influenced by the Roadmaps outlined in the CFD Vision 2030 Study (e.g. rapid transition towards more routine use of hybrid RANS/LES methods), while some of them happened on the margins of it (e.g. advances in machine learning methods and data-driven modeling).
