The use of ground as a thermal sinker has been largely used in the past centuries when low energy was available to control thermal conditions inside the buildings. The buried architectures in Cappadocia and in all Mediterranean countries represent good examples of application. Most of these buildings control the heat exchange through the envelope that is significantly reduced if the exterior temperature is not the air temperature (or solar-air temperature) but the ground temperature. As known ground temperature is less variable than air temperature and this effect gets more and more significant with the depth. The use of ground system has been largely used to control summer conditions (mainly) or winter conditions, but we have very few historical examples of combined ground heating and cooling that cover all year.
