Water Pumping and Wind Energy Conversion in the Southern Algeria: the Case of Tindouf

The southern Algeria is desert whereas important water resources are available under the ground. In this region, the water resources are usually exploited by boring wells and distributing water over the cultivable soils thanks to the foggara, an ancestral but efficient and economic irrigation management. With such organisation, oases mainly occupied by palm trees, were created. For example, the palm groves of Tindouf, Adrar and Ouargla represent about 60%, 100% and 80% of the agricultural activities of these towns respectively. In some oases, artesian wells spurt water and irrigate the palm groves. However, in most cases, water must be pumped at depths running form few ten meters to several hundred meters (sometimes few km). In preceding works, we have pointed out the availability of non negligible wind and solar energy resources in the south of Algeria Especially, the south west of this country where wind is strong enough, is suitable for the implantation of medium wind turbines working at 20 m of altitude. This paper deals with the conditions of coupling water pumps with this kind of generator and the case of the irrigation of the oasis of Tindouf is considered since this town is situated in a windy region of Algeria.
