In conjunction with Naval Surface Warfare Center - Crane, Indiana and Naval Surface Warfare Center - Panama City, Florida, Saft has developed a Lithium Ion Battery System for use in the Mark 8 Mod 1 SEAL Delivery Vehicle (SDV) manned wet submersible. The Saft Lithium Ion Battery System was developed to replace the outdated Silver Zinc battery, supplying greater than 25% more energy in the same space and providing a more robust and capable battery system. In addition to the increase in available energy and a service life expected to outlast the current vehicle, the battery system also provides unique system features specifically designed for this demanding application including performance monitoring and fault localization to the cell level, diode protected cell strands, electrically isolated charge and discharge paths, charge in place capability, state of charge and state of health indication and regenerative energy acceptance. This conversion from simple energy storage, to a sophisticated, engineered battery solution presented a unique set of system challenges which were all resolved following a thorough System Engineering effort.
