Many scholars have suggested that narrative, which belongs to a type of representation characterized by story telling, is a unique approach that has advantages in supporting cognitive utilities, such as perception, memory, emotion, and motivation. However, few studies have been conducted investigating the functions of narrative, especially in a formal educational context. This article introduces the emotive effect of narrative, its effect on carrying emotions, motivations, and inner thoughts and suggests that the emotive effect is one of the major cognitive functions of narrative that may support online instruction. It then presents a design in actual online instruction in an effort to verify this function. More on the experiment, results, and future studies will be presented at the meeting.
