Free-edge stresses for an unsymmetric bidirectional laminate of the class [0°/90°]{sub}T subjected to uniaxial tensile loading are determined from a local laminate analysis and from classical finite elements. In the local analysis each layer is modeled as a homogeneous, orthotropic plate. The loading is assumed to be applied in the same manner as in a standard tensile test in which the grips prohibit rotation along the length of the specimen. Thus, the axial curvature is assumed to vanish. Numerical results for the interface shear and normal stresses show excellent agreement between the two approaches except in a region very near the free edge.
