Relationship between academic fields and career paths after college graduation in Japan

This study aims to find the efficient way in informing pre-higher education students of possible career path selections after college education. In this study, we 1) try to visualize the characteristic of learning contents in each academic field of university, and 2) examine the relationship between academic fields and career paths after college graduation. A morphological analysis on the nomenclature of major fields of academic degrees revealed the characteristic of learning contents of academic fields. A correspondence analysis revealed that studying a specialized area of profession was related to employment in a specific occupation and industry, while studying an interdisciplinary major is related to employment in a wide variety of occupations. These results suggest the value of information on academic fields taken considered in college selection.
