DSM Innovative Endurance Backsheet Outdoor Validation in Hot and Humid Climate

DSM has created a next-generation backsheet that unlocks new value for the solar industry, by delivering maximum protection and long-term power gain at competitive costs. DSM Endurance backsheets are made from sustainable materials proven to perform for decades in the harshest conditions; and are co-extruded for extra interlayer strength. In this work the outdoor performance of DSM Endurance backsheets in a harsh climate has been demonstrated in a 25 kW rooftop grid connected PV system, and compared to the established all PET based backsheet modules produced at the same time at the production line of the Tier1 module manufacturer. Strings with DSM backsheet had an energy yield of 0.10-0.28 % above benchmark string. Visual check of both types of modules after 18 months of exposure showed the same performance and no backsheet degradation or failure. Field IV measurements of 15 modules of each type, referenced to IV STC module data determined a degradation rate to be in the range of measurement uncertainty: DSM backsheet modules 2.15% and benchmark backsheet modules 2.30% median degradation per year, including initial LID. PID, and IR images showed no presence of PID degradation or hot spot damages of the backsheet material.
