Pulverised Fuel Ash disposal & utilisation shall continue to be an important area of national concern due to India's dependence on coal for power generation for foreseeable future. The scenario with respect to pulverised fuel ash management has undergone considerable improvement over past few years. Due to increasing environmental concern and growing magnitude of the problem it has become imperative to manage pulverised fuel ash more efficiently. It is more important in view of the fact that 'pulverised fuel ash' has tremendous potential that is yet to be exploited. Current annual generation of pulverised fuel ash in India is just over 100 million tonne which is expected to reach around 170 million tonne by 2012. As a result of the focussed thrust being provided by Fly Ash Mission of Government of India along-with many other agencies, its utilisation has increased from 3 percent (in 1994, of 40 million tonne production) to about 18 percent (in 2001, of 100 million tonne production). Lot more is required to be done including creating awareness among the people & user agencies.
