The migration of the current optical transport networks towards Software Defined Networks (SDN) paradigm requires suitable models to describe node behaviour. In an early stage, this new approach was developed for L2-L3 networks using Openflow protocol. In recent time, it appear necessary to address also the modelling of L0-L1 networks. The standardization is currently pushing the use of a more structured and consistent approach based on YANG (Yet Another Next Generation) data modelling language, although Openflow is still considered. This paper is focussed on the most the recent activities, which has been devoted to (D)WDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) and OTN (Optical Transport Network) layers modelling, capturing the technology evolution and the standardisation progress (e.g. sliceable transponder, sub-ODU - Optical Data Unit - framing). It is worth to highlight how this approach is also influencing the development methodology, which can now leverage in an automated code generation environment, reducing lead-time and enhancing the quality in software production.
