The use of permanent magnets (PMs) in eddy current brakes (ECBs) increases efficiency because no energy is consumed by an excitation system of the brake. The main drawback of this case is no possibility to change braking torque of the ECBs in operating mode. This paper proposes a way for torque control in the ECBs with PMs. The torque control is realized by means of mechanical movements of an inner salient pole core that provides small reluctance in “On” position and very high reluctance in “Off' position. The basic concept and approximate torque calculations have been done.
