A Study of Electric Power Frequency in Southern Africa, Great Britain and Continental Europe

Power frequency is an important measure of the balance between power supply and demand in electric power systems. Further, electric equipment operates at optimum efficiency and safety within certain bands of power frequency. Prolonged low or high values of power frequency may damage equipment and interrupt power supply. Most regulators or power pool coordinators set performance targets for power frequency control in grid codes or operating manuals. However, technical and economic constraints impede most power system operators from complying with these targets. Using numeric power frequency data for the entire year 2017, power frequency was studied in the following three Synchronous Areas: Southern Africa, Great Britain, and Continental Europe. This paper discusses performance of how power frequency was controlled in these Synchronous Areas based on their respective defined performance criteria.
