The mechanisms of the effect of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation (X= 172 nm) on various types of microfungi spores were investigated. It is found that there are several parallel direct and indirect mechanisms, which lead to spores inactivation, including destruction of the cell wall and DNA by means of direct absorption of VUV radiation and by VUV photolysis reactive products. IR transmission spectra indicate the etching of the spore cell wall material with the predominant degradation of the polysaccharides. Electrophoresis of irradiated spores DNA shows heavy (about 20 000 pairs of nucleotides) and light fragments appearance. Experiments using an antioxidant (iodine) indicate the participation of reactive radicals in inactivation, which provide not less than 10% of inactivated cells.
