The Age of Data Hits the University Curriculum: The Development of a Cross-college Data Analytics Program

The ubiquity of data is making possible a truly scientific, data-driven approach to decision making. Universities are responding by creating analytics programs at various levels. This paper describes a new cross-college undergraduate program at Drake University. The degree can be earned in the College of Arts and Sciences or the College of Business. The core of the program focuses on computer science and statistics skills. The major includes a specialty area. Examples of specialty areas are bioinformatics, marketing, and economics. The program has a recommended internship and local companies are already making plans to provide internship experiences for these majors.
