In the present study, the potential of chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) as a new vehicle for the delivery of drugs to the ocular tissue was investigated. The carboplatin loaded CSNPs were in the size range of ~300 nm, exhibited a high zeta potential of about 36 mV and drug encapsulation of upto ~20 % (w/w). Physicochemical characterization was further investigated by FTIR, DSC and TEM. In vitro release studies, revealed a fast release of about 25 % of the drug during the first 24 hours followed by a sustained drug release. CSNPs also demonstrated greater and sustained antiproliferative activity of the drug in dose and time dependent manner as compared to the drug in solution in retinoblastoma cell line (Y-79). The higher cytotoxic effect of CSNPs maybe due to their greater cellular uptake (15 folds as compared to native carboplatin).
