摘要

Recent suspension bridge cable evaluations have utilized a sophisticated "Brittle Cable Model" to determine the "Cable Safety Factor" of the degraded cables. This paper examines the analysis and design process of a suspension bridge, and the term "Cable Safety Factor". To readily grasp the safe load carrying capacity of an existing suspension bridge with degraded cables, the paper suggests analysis with "Effective Area" approach and a safety definition using the cable wire proportional limit instead of its ultimate strength.
