Development of a Knowledge-based Infotronics System for Manufacturing Intelligence

Conventional way of decision making in manufacturing processes is inadequate for converting real-time internal shop floor data into both manufacturing and enterprise decision. There is a gap between the disciplines of plant floor operation and various Artificial Intelligent (AI) Technologies systems. Basing on the concept of human nervous system and the modern techniques in both AI and shop floor control systems such as automatic supervision, knowledge-based system and agent technologies, and adopting infotronics technologies as the bidirectional pipeline between plant floor and various IT systems, an architecture of an integrated system, named Knowledge-based Infotronics (KIT) System, is proposed to achieve real-time manufacturing intelligence, and to reuse and share the knowledge in making enterprise decision based on the manufacturing intelligence. The applications of the system are to enable the knowledge reuse, storage, and sharing within the enterprise directly from any web-enabled PC, as well as manufacturers to facilitate the manufacturing processes and explore new opportunities for improvement, are also discussed.
