Sources of error (uncertainty) in any manufacturing or dimensional inspection process should be minimized to ensure reliable, consistent, and safe operation. The many possible sources of uncertainty [1] include environmental, mechanical, and human errors. There is a broadening opportunity to reduce or eliminate these uncertainties and engage people on the production floor to make significant productivity improvements that the entire enterprise can appreciate. Any manufacturing process (subtractive/additive/hybrid) benefits and we look at how Universal Metrology Automation® streamlines the way leaders implement an intelligent and rapid quality control process which scales with production need. The challenges related to developing integrated solutions and the methods/platforms available that reduce or eliminate risk will be discussed. There are conventional advantages available immediately to innovators. Those who have already begun pursuing Industry 4.0 [2] understand why metrology is the key to the "Smart Factory". Wherein automated metrology delivers objective data, instantly highlights trends and outliers, delivers intelligent guidance and decisions, and allows technicians to focus critical thinking and problem solving on meaningful events in the day-to-day production environment. Some plant managers might see the metrology lab as the quality assurance cost center, but metrology is critical to production and product innovation. True it can be labor intensive but when paired with automation it optimizes how we leverage human talent and problem solving. Wasting talent on repetitive tasks is no longer a requirement, nor do labor-intensive activities generate a competitive edge. Leaders see this as an opportunity to empower skilled individuals towards activities that are value added to the organization and promote the digital intelligence that is your competitive advantage and achieves Industry 4.0 today.
