Redesign of Salyut Station for Dual-use of Research and Tourism

As the space industry shifts toward commercialization, this research examines the design and reuse of a space station aimed at providing efficient access for both research and tourism. With the end of ISS operations approaching in the mid-2020s, this is a promising time for new commercial opportunities This paper looks at redesigning the Salyut station into a multipurpose human-centered space station. The historic Salyut station was once used for international reconnaissance by the Soviet Union in the 1970s. The Salyut station, with a new life under the name "Almaz"is owned by Excalibur Almaz. It is to be launched in sun-svnchronous low Earth orbit. In order to provide efficient access to space, the design aims to serve two uses: research and tourism. With tw o highly opposing users and functions, the design has to support the requirements of both. Other constraints are the predetermined structure and, most importantly, a limited volume to fit a maximum of six users. Volume studies led to the determination of space optimization and design decision making, helping in the synthesis of different zoning patterns. One of the main formative tools in the design process is the specific geometry of the station that dictated our design choices. With research from environmental psychology, the Almazspace station incorporates evidence-based, biophilic design principles in order to improve the mental health and well-being of crew members. and subsequently their performance. The final outcome through this research is the creation of a series of flexible features that can transform the station for various use-cases, adapting to both user groups, thereby breaking the monotony of the small volume. The use of deployable and multipurpose surfaces (for e.g., deployable surface for dining can be later tucked away, a rotatable screen with two-fold use as a display for communications in tourist mode and controls in research mode) increases the flexibility of the interior volume.
