Two of the most important requirements for the global energy system in the 21st century are a significant degree of decarbonization to combat climate change and a minimization of locally and regionally acting pollutants.Transportation is one of the 3 main Sectors of the energy system,the other two being electricity generation and heating/cooling.It is important to recognize in this context that global systems optimization,does not necessarily correlate with the "local" optimum of the transportation sector.
