Ice-on-coil storage tank, which consists chiefly of horizontal or spiral coils, is one of important components of ice direct storage system. During the process of ice storage, there are two complicated phase change heat transfer processes: one is liquid-gas phase change inside coils and the other belongs to liquid-solid phase change outside coils. In the paper, a dynamic mathematical simulation model of direct evaluation ice-on-coil storage system has been developed using thermal enthalpy method and the model numerical solution obtained by finite difference method can be used to determine the amount of time needed for solidification of water. At the same time, the simulation results were discussed in detail and some optimal operating conditions and enhancement heat transfer strategies were suggested from the discussion results. The mathematical model can provide a basis for the engineering design, research on systematic study, and operation of ice storage system.
