The focus of this paper is on the preattentive and attentive mechanisms including saccadic gaze shifts integrated in our active vision system. The preattentive subsystem analyses bottom-up processed features such as symmetry, eccentricity, and color contrast. The attentive subsystem can be divided into two parts: One part combines the bottom-up features; the other part integrates topdown information supplied by an object hypothesis. The active vision system is outlined for object recognition in real-world scenes.
